Although you typically are not actually required to complete an internship in order to finish veterinary school and earn your veterinary degree and license, this does not mean that you shouldn't participate in an internship. Figure Out Your Preferences
Right now, you might not be totally sure of what you want to specialize in when you become a veterinarian. You might have some ideas of what you will and will not like, but it's hard to really know for sure until you have some real-world experience. You can work alongside a veterinary specialist to determine if their specialty seems right for you, which can help you choose your next classes while you're in veterinary school and can help you choose your career path after you graduate. Even working with a general veterinarian will give you the chance to experience different areas of veterinary medicine so you can choose the one that you like the most.
Get Real-World Experience
You are probably learning a lot while in veterinary school, both while you're learning in the classroom and when you're working in the lab. This is a bit different from actually working in a veterinarian's office or performing farm calls as a large animal veterinarian. If you'd like to get some real-world experience that will help you get the most out of your education and that will help you prepare for your future career, you will probably find that you'll get this experience even more as an intern than you will simply from going to school.
Work Toward Getting a Job
Even though you might be going through veterinary school because you love animals, you probably also want to make a lucrative career out of working as a veterinarian once you graduate. This is only going to be an option if you can find a good job as a veterinarian. By doing an internship, you could increase your chances of getting offered a job from the same veterinarian that you will be interning with. Additionally, you will have a reference that you can list on your resume if you start looking for a job with another veterinarian.
