If your family has a vacation lake house, and you are getting ready to get a puppy, then you should consider a dog that loves the water. It will be lots of fun to have the puppy grow up around the water and let them swim in the lake. Your kids can play fetch by throwing a stick out into the water, and the dog can go swim out and bring it back.

There are lots of dogs that love water, but this list is narrowed down to larger dog breeds.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador retriever is an awesome family dog. It has a very nice temperament, and it's great around children. The lab was bread to retrieve game in water environments. When hunters went out to shoot ducks, the lab would head out into the marsh and swim out to retrieve the duck. They have such an astounding temperament that they are used as service dogs for blind people and even with people with Autism. They are big, but gentle and kind.

Newfoundland

The Newfoundland is a big dog that is used in water rescue. They are big and muscular and have a very thick coat, which makes them great for cold-water swimming. This is a great dog if you and your family want a dog for colder weather. Because they have such a heavy coat, and were bred to work around the coastal waters of cold Newfoundland, they are not a great idea if you live in the Deep South or somewhere else where it's warm most of the year. But, if you're in a cold climate, then these dogs are perfect.

These dogs are also very gentle. They are listed as "sweet, devoted, and patient" by the American Kennel Club. So, they are the perfect puppy to get if you want a dog that will behave and be respectful of your children.

Standard Poodle

The standard poodle is a large dog, so if your image of a poodle is a small toy poodle, then you should check out these larger breeds. These dogs were used to retire game for hunters. This meant they were comfortable swimming. They have a curly coat which is perfect for water. They are very active and love to run around, swim and play. So, they are great if you and your family want a dog that you can take on hikes, swim with in the lake, or play fetch with.

They are also incredibly smart. And you don't have to groom them with any of the fancy puffs and intricate patterns that some poodle lovers choose.
